Yatvin defeats certiorari in U.S. Supreme Court, preserves special education victory

SilhouetteEmily, a 1st grade student in a Pennsylvania school district, was identified in 2008 as a student with a disability needing special education.   Dissatisfied with the school’s plan to address Emily’s needs, her parents enrolled her in The Benchmark School, a private school with a program to address her needs, particularly in reading.

Emily’s parents then hired Alan Yatvin to represent them. Yatvin filed an administrative complaint with the Pennsylvania Office of Dispute Resolution, requesting reimbursement for Emily’s tuition, along with transportation to Benchmark.  Following a three day hearing, the Pennsylvania Special Education Hearing Officer ruled on April 21, 2009, that the school district had failed to offer Emily an appropriate educational program, and ordered the school district to pay Emily’s tuition and provide her transportation. Mayor names Yatvin to Philadelphia Police Community Oversight Board

On April 17, 2015, Philadelphia Mayor Michael A. Nutter named Alan L. Yatvin to the newly created Police Community Oversight Board. The Board was established by the Mayor by Executive Order No. 1-15, in response to the United States Department of Justice Office of Community Oriented Policy Services (DOJ-COPS) report entitled, “Collaborative Reform Initiative:  An Assessment of Deadly Force Policy and Practice in the Philadelphia Police Department” and the Interim Report of the President’s Task Force on 21st Century Policing. Yatvin gives Diabetes Safe at School Presentation

AYatvin_JDRF_CHOP_28Mar15On March 28, 2015, Alan Yatvin presented at the Annual Conference of the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Living Well with Diabetes: Now and in the Future.

Yatvin named to Board of Directors of the American Diabetes Association

Alan L. Yatvin has been elected to a three year term as one of the 18 members of the National Board of Directors of the American Diabetes Association (ADA). ada-logoBased in Alexandria, Virginia, the American Diabetes Association (ADA) is leading the fight to Stop Diabetes and its deadly consequences and fighting for those affected by diabetes. The ADA funds research to prevent, cure and manage diabetes; delivers services to hundreds of communities; provides objective and credible information; and gives voice to those denied their rights because of diabetes. Founded in 1940, the ADA’s mission is to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes. Our world – from Filbert Street courthouse to Market Street courthouse, perhaps interspersed with a bold junket to West Chester – is too small for Alan Yatvin. Somehow this protean practitioner has balanced his role as a partner in the firm of Popper & Yatvin with meaningful appearances as defense counsel in the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) at The Hague, representing defendants accused of crimes in the former Yugoslavia. For good measure Yatvin chairs the court’s Association of Defense Counsel Membership Committee. And last spring the globetrotting Yatvin was sworn in as a member of the Bar Association of the Kingdom of Cambodia, joining the list of international counsel at the Extraordinary Chambers in the Court of Cambodia (ECCC).  Click here to read the full article.
 

Yatvin on ethics panel in The Hague

ADCTraining_8Nov14On November 8, 2014, the Association of Defence Counsel Practising Before the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ADC-ICTY) held an ethics training in The Hague, The Netherlands.  Alan Yatvin was a member of the panel entitled: Ethical Considerations During Pre-Trial Proceedings.  Alan is admitted to practice before the ICTY, the Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals (the consolidated residual court for the ICTY and the Rwanda Tribunal) and the Extraordinary Chambers in the Court of Cambodia (ECCC), also known as the Khmer Rouge Tribunal. Program attendees included ADC-ICTY members, interns and staff, as well as defence team members from the International Criminal Court (ICC) and the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL), staff of the ICTY/ICTR/MICT Registry, Prosecution and Chambers, and students from various universities around The Hague. At the ADC’s General Assembly on November 9th, Alan was elected to his 5th term as chair of the ADC-ICTY Membership Committee.
